What the Allegro Packaging Standard is
The Allegro Packaging Standard is a set of guidelines that will make preparing a parcel for dispatch easier. They allow you to better secure your products and adjust your business to the new EU regulations.
The Standard describes how to pack a parcel to reduce the risk of being charged additional fees by the carrier. We have prepared a list of recommended and non-recommended packing materials. We also suggest which materials you can use when dispatching heavy or irregularly-shaped products.
Why it is a good idea to follow our guidelines on packing parcels
You can save money by avoiding additional costs — non-standard parcels need to be sorted manually, which is more expensive. If you decide to follow our Standard, you will facilitate their automatic sorting. This way, you may avoid additional fees charged by carriers.
Your products are better secured — durable cardboard ensures protection during transport. Our guidelines may help you reduce the number of damaged parcels and complaints.
You strengthen your store's positive image — a parcel that is aesthetic and easy to open provides a more pleasant unpacking experience and may encourage customers to buy from you again.
You are prepared for the introduction of new EU laws — our Standard is based on the PPWR regulation. If you follow it now, you will be able to adjust to the new regulations faster.
You reduce waste — we encourage you to use single-material or recycled packaging. This will facilitate waste segregation easier for buyers.
What the PPWR is
The PPWR is the EU packaging and packaging waste regulation. It specifies how to reduce the negative environmental impact of packaging. It also indicates which materials to use and how to prepare a parcel.
These guidelines will be implemented in phases — between August 2026 and 2030.
What packing materials we recommend
We recommend using recyclable materials like:
- cardboard (the 3-ply or 5-ply type)
- cardboard envelopes and book wraps
- paper bags
- paper void fillers (such as honeycomb wrap or crumbled paper)
- paper tape or reinforced tape.
These are all PPWR-compliant materials.
What materials are not recommended
Avoid using materials that:
- make automatic sorting difficult
- are not recyclable
- may damage other parcels in transport.
Example of such products are:
- stretch wrap — excessive wrapping makes the package difficult to open
- black stretch wrap — is not visible on the scanner, so such a parcel needs to be sorted manually
- foil packs
- products that are waste (such as empty beverage bottles)
- sharp elements (for example, protruding staples, wires) — they can injure workers or damage other parcels
- EPS foam — it can crumble and contaminate the sorting machines
- materials that are not easily separated (like a cardboard with a plastic tape) — they make sorting waste more difficult.
When you can make an exception
In some cases, you may use plastic materials with at least 35% of recycled content. Use them if:
- the weight of your shipment exceeds 30 kg — you can secure it with plastic tape
- your shipment has an irregular shape or is on a pallet — you may use transparent stretch wrap
- you are securing glass or fragile products — you may wrap them in bubble wrap
- you are shipping liquids or paints — you may secure the lid, for example, with plastic tape.
If you are using compostable material, check if it has a certificate (for example, TUV Austria, OK Compost) and information about the waste bin it should go into. Such material decomposes in an environmentally safe way, but only if it is placed in the correct bin.
How to pack parcels
- Match the packaging size to the product — avoid empty spaces and excessive void fill.
- Select durable packaging — use 3-ply or 5-ply cardboard.
- Make sure the parcel is easy to open — do not wrap the cardboard boxes with film or excessive amounts of tape. Thanks to this, the buyer will be able to quickly open your parcel.
- Use a single material type — avoid mixing different materials to make waste segregation easier. For example, use paper tape for cardboard boxes, or use cartons with a self-adhesive tear strip.
- Stick the label correctly — place it on the flat side of the parcel. Do not cover the barcode with tape, so the courier can scan it.
- Match the parcel size to the size of the parcel lockers.
- Secure liquids and perishable products — make sure they do not leak and damage other parcels. For example, tape the cap and stabilize the bottle inside the package.
- Apply multi-use packaging — so that the buyer can use it to return or exchange the product.
Where to find packaging that meets the Standard
You can find it, for example, in the Allegro Pack store. There, you can buy packaging compliant with the Standard at prices we have negotiated directly with manufacturers. We do not add a margin to these prices — we cover the storage and handling costs ourselves. This allows you to buy packaging at a lower price while maintaining a professional look of your parcels.
You can also find packaging that complies with our Standard in stores other than Allegro Pack.
