Poland's deposit-refund system came into effect today. Adapt your sales to the new system
Starting October 1, 2025, the deposit-refund system took effect in both physical and online stores across Poland. It has been introduced based on the directive of the European Parliament and the regulation by the Polish Minister of Climate and Environment. See what it means for you.
New obligations apply to all entrepreneurs in Poland who sell beverages in packaging covered by the deposit. Read our article for sellers to learn more. Below, you can find a summary with key information.
What products are covered by the deposit
The deposit-refund system covers beverages intended for direct consumption that come in packaging of a specified capacity. These are:
- single-use plastic bottles up to 3 liters
- metal cans up to 1 liter
- reusable glass bottles up to 1.5 liters.
This means that two versions of products — with and without the deposit — may be on the market at the same time (for example, beverages coming from older batches or imported beverages).
How much the deposit is
Deposit amounts:
- 0.50 PLN — for single-use plastic bottles (made of HDPE or PET) and metal cans
- 1 PLN — for reusable glass bottles.
How to sell products covered by the deposit on Allegro
If you sell products that are subject to the new regulations on Allegro, you are obliged to:
- mark your offers correctly — separately for the products with and without the deposit.
- charge the deposit from buyers at the moment of purchase — you will get the deposit amount together with money from sales. You will check the deposit you charged in the Orders tab. Apart from that, if the buyer decides to return a product, you should refund them the money paid for the purchase and the deposit.
- provide information in the offer description that each product purchased online can be returned at any collection point — for example, reverse vending machines, big grocery stores, or other points designated by local authorities. If you only sell online, you are not obliged to collect return packaging or refund the deposit.
You can only list products covered by the deposit in the specified subcategories. In those subcategories, you can also list products without the deposit symbol.
How we display the deposit amount
According to the regulations, the deposit cannot be included in the product price. On Allegro, we display the deposit amount everywhere we display the product price. We display the deposit amount below the price on the product list and the product page.
How the deposit-refund system affects your settlements with Allegro
- The deposit is not subject to VAT.
- We do not charge sales commission from the deposit.
- We do not include the deposit in the total purchase value that qualifies orders for free Smart! delivery or in the free delivery threshold you specify yourself.
What if you export your products and sell in foreign marketplaces
The solutions connected with the deposit-refund system will only be available on allegro.pl. If you list offers directly on allegro.cz, allegro.sk, or allegro.hu — currently, you cannot add the deposit in the offer listing form. In the foreign marketplaces, we will enable the tools for charging the deposit soon.
If you share offers in foreign marketplaces, make sure to adapt to the local regulations.
